Olivia Chow is Assistant Curator, Visual Art, at M+, the new museum of visual culture in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. She participated in the curatorial process for the exhibitions Shirley Tse: Stakeholders, Hong Kong in Venice (2019), Hong Kong’s participation at the 58th Venice Biennale and Shirley Tse: Stakes and Holders (2020). Before joining M+, she held various curatorial positions at Para Site (Hong Kong) and at The Works Art and Design Festival (Edmonton, Canada). At Para Site, she edited The Unappropriated Recipes, an unconventional cookbook that responded to Hong Kong through the collective contributions from artists, curators, and collaborators in the institution's local and international art community. As an artist, her other projects include: We Do Chicken Right (Centre A, Vancouver and John & Maggie Mitchell Art Gallery, Edmonton, 2018), Any Other Business (The Office, Hong Kong, 2017), Thanksgiving in Tin Wan (Mur Nomade, Hong Kong, 2016), and Gastrosophy (Jackson Power, Edmonton, 2014).
Her work focuses on recognizing and reconciling the sense of identity displacement and searching for the inclusion of diasporic citizens in contemporary society. She draws inspiration from the relations with everyday domestic activities; from observations and reflections on social encounters.
